Venice of the north is what Bruges is called. Many will consider this beautiful city as one of the finest of the world.

But what makes this city so special?

Bruges or "Brugge" as it is in dutch means Bridge. And that is what Bruges is all about.
Bruges was during the middle ages one of the most important cities of the world due to its connection with the sea. Nowadays we still see the medieval heart of this city. The Unesco has placed the entire inner city of Bruges on its list of world heritage.
Bruges is a warm charming city which is particularly beautiful during wintertime. It is quiet and most peacefull. Bruges has one of the best preserved building of the middle ages in the world and is one of the places you should visit in your life.

Hotels in Bruges are as numerous as canals. The amount of small familyhotels greatly outnumbers the bigger hotels and certainly adds to the charm of Bruges. A visit to Bruges starts with finding a beautiful hotel in Bruges to stay. I personally would prefer to stay in a small familyhotel right in the center of Bruges.

Sometimes visitors prefer to stay in a hotel in Brussels while they visit Belgium or even some stay in hotels in Antwerp but I personally believe your stay in Belgium will be a lot more interesting if you stay in Bruges.

The coastal Region aswell as Brussels, Antwerp or Ghent are easily visited from your hotel in Bruges. But at night Bruges is farout the most beatiful and most quiet city of them all.

During my stay I visited a few hotels and these are the ones I think are most worth a visit.

Have fun in Bruges and let me know how you enjoyed it.

  • Wonderful weekends in a hotel in Bruges

Apart from its wonderful medieval architecture, Bruges is also well known for its museums that can be find, without exaggerating, around every corner. The greatest quality of Bruges’ museums is the huge diversity, ranging from the Flemish Primitives to contemporary art, from the classic ‘fine arts’ to archeological excavations, furniture, silverware, folklore, etc. Various ‘Flemish Primitives’ Masters, such as Hans Memling and Jan van Eyck lived and worked most of their life in Bruges. Also, the only work of art made by Michelangelo to have left Italy during his lifetime, a marble statue of Our Lady, can be admired in the Church of Our Lady. There's also the unforgettable Groeningemuseum, with 600 years of different style paintings, the wonderful Memling Museum, the intriguing Gruuthusemuseum, the Museum of Folklore, the Guido Gezelle Museum, St. John's House, the Old St. John's Hospital (an absolute must-see), the Basilica of the Holy Blood (displays an ampul supposedly containing Christ's blood), the Diamond Museum, etc.
All hotels in Brugge are only a stone's throw away from the museums in the city centre.

    City of food & beverages

If you've had enough off looking at all the buildings, it's time to sit back and talk about the things you've seen or still want to see. Of all the cities in Northern Europe, Bruges ranks extremely high when it comes to restaurants, bars, pubs or clubs. Embrace all the goods and enjoy the typical Belgian chocolate and waffles, or drink a few of the countless varieties of famous Belgian beers. You could ofcourse also let yourself completely go in one of the many gastronomic restaurants or hotels in Bruges. A lot of those restaurants and the romantic hotels in Bruges are unavoidable for he who likes to enjoy all the good things in life.

A couple examples of very good (and affordable) restaurants in the city centre are: Restaurant Aneth and Restaurant Arthies or perhaps you can take a look around on this website about restaurants in Bruges.

Hotels in Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent or Leuven

Departing from Bruges, it’s absolutely recommended to extend your stay in Belgium and also visit the other beautiful cities like Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent or Leuven. Since Belgium/Flanders isn't really that big, journeys by train e.g. usually take less than 1 hour.
Hotels in Bruges are in general very comparable to hotels in Antwerp, hotels in Brussels, hotels in Ghent or hotels in Leuven, although hotels in Bruges are usually likely to be a little smaller in size. Hotels in Brussel normally are a bit further away from the city centre than hotels in Bruges. On the other hand, the distance to railway stations is the same for hotels in Bruges than for hotels in Antwerp, hotels in Brussels or hotels in Leuven.

  • Holidays in a hotel in Belgium

When you want to make a trip to Belgium, Bruges has, as well as Brussels, Ghent & Antwerp, all the aspects to make your stay exhilirating. Almost all hotels in Bruges are situated in old cobbled carless streets and alleys and offer views on romantic canals everywhere you look. The perfectly going together of age-old and brand new intrigues everyone who visits Bruges for the first time. The best way to spend your time in Bruges is to stay at least one night in one of the many fine Bruges hotels.

The reason why Bruges architecture is so amazing is because the authorities have done their absolute best to preserve the medieval image of the town. Many of its buildings are famous worldwide, including the Church of Our Lady, one of the world’s highest brick towers. Some other examples are: The 13th Century Belfry Tower, The Burg and The Beguinage. You can still hear the 47 bells, as the full time traditional bell ringer puts on regular free concerts for everyone around. There are a few hotels brugge that can be found in the shadow of the Belfry. Bruges is not only worth the visit for its old culture. At the newly built Concert Hall, one of the most prominent music complexes in Flanders you can enjoy high quality contemporary culture on a daily basis. .

Raining or freezing? Don't let your head down because Bruges never seizes to amaze you, all year round! It's hard not to remember your stay in Bruges once you have gazed at it on a snowy day in Winter or on a hot summer day in July. Please note that Bruges can become very crowded during the day. But at night, when the vast majority of tourists are asleep in one of the many hotels in Bruges, the city totally reclaims its charm and quiet, just like the old days. For everyone who doesn't like big crowds during the day, there's the streets and canals to the north of the egg-shaped city. They will take you right up to the 'Vesten', the ancient and beautifully restored fortifications that still surround the city. The evergreen lawns seem to never end there, the age-old trees have been there forever and are here and there accompanied by some marvellously renovated traditional windmills.

  • Why go to Bruges?

    brugge1

Bruges totally deserved to be crowned as 'European Capital of Culture' in 2002. This year-long cultural event was the highpoint of a centuries long and very rich cultural history. Bruges is widely known to be one of the most picturesque cities in Northern Europe, and therefore was put on the list of the World Heritage Site of UNESCO.
Almost a thousand years ago Brugge got its city charter. The name derives from the Old Norse word Bryggja, which means 'port' or 'landing stage' and may even have the same origin as Bryggen in Norway. The city knew a very rapid expansion throughout the 13th, 14th and 15th century, before cities like Antwerp took over the regional Hegemony, due to the sanding of the Swin. For decades, Bruges played a centre role in the Flemish cloth fairs circuit and its influence reached out to as far as England and Scotland. The opening of the Bourse in 1309 placed Bruges on the map: it rapidly became the most sophisticated mony market in the Low Countries. By the 15th century, when the city's power reached its peak, about 40.000 people lived inside the city walls. After a couple hundred years of downfall, a new source of income, namely tourism, gave the city new hope for a prosperous future: from the late 1800s on, Bruges became extremely famous as a majour tourist destination. Year after year, it keeps attracting tourists worldwide.

Today about 120.000 people live in Bruges, 20.000 of them still live in the historic city centre.
